“I was told I had a nice smile…
…no one has ever said that to me before.”
Hannah is a gentle, quietly spoken person, but someone you warm to the minute you meet her. Her friendly face was what initially encouraged me to approach her at a recent fashion styling event we were both at. I asked if she would be interested in a makeover…and that’s how it began. “I thought why not, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity!” she says.
Hannah, 43, is the mother of two boys, aged 4 & 22. Despite the age gap, the boys are very close and get on well. Hannah herself is from a large family, being the second youngest of six children. Her mother is from the Cook Islands, Rakahanga, which is a three-day boat ride from Rarotonga. Her mother came to New Zealand when she was 16 for an adventure with a friend and that’s where she met a young man from Opotiki. Hannah is very close to her family and loves spending time with them all.
Until recently, Hannah owned a soft furnishings business making curtains, blinds and cushions. She loves sewing and makes lots of tops for herself. If she had her time again, she would love to have been a fashion designer, but confesses that truck driving also had its appeal! She recently secured a job as a teacher aide at the local Te Reo school.
Her creative talents don’t end at sewing, she also loves singing and said one day she would love to be a professional singer. One of life’s highlights was singing the South African National Anthem in Parliament for the South African High Commissioner. Her other two dreams include owning her own home and doing her OE.
If granted one wish… “it would be for ‘wisdom’, just as King Solomon in the Bible did. With wisdom you can make sound choices and give sound advice and then I wouldn’t have to worry about half the things I do” Hannah says.
