Your journey to gorgeousness - Lesson 6

Colour is the final key ingredient in personal styling. 


You may have found a fabulous garment that ticks all the right boxes in terms of styling. It complements or enhances your body shape and reflects your personality well, but if the colour isn’t right then it’s not going to work.


A colour is right when it uplifts and enhances you. Your eyes become more prominent and you have a healthy glow. 


A colour is wrong when you look tired, washed out or even sick.  Wrinkles and dark circles under your eyes will be more pronounced when the colour is not right.




Three key things to consider:


1.  THE DEPTH OF THE COLOUR - are my colourings and features suited to light, medium or dark colours?


2.  THE UNDERTONE OF THE COLOUR - in this case, the undertone of your skin.  Check the underside of your wrist, that’s the closest to your true colour.  Does it have a blue undertone (cool skin colouring) or yellow undertone (warm skin colouring) or is it neutral?  Check your skin against someone else for comparison.


3.  THE CLARITY OF THE COLOUR - do you suit clear, crisp and bold colours or softer, more muted colours?








Are you naturally a very light colouring - hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, eyes, skin?

  • Your colour palette is light.
  • Avoid dark colours, especially black.

If you wear dark colours, wear a light colour near your face.


Medium (neutral)





Do you have dark hair, eyelashes, eyebrows and eyes?

  • Your colour palette is dark and strong. Black works really well.
  • You can wear bold and dark colours close to your face.

Lighter colours may not work well on you. If this is the case, complement them with darker colours.





2.  undertone of colour

Your complexion will have a rosy, pinky, sometimes slightly blue tinge to it. You're likely to have ash-blonde, silver, grey or black hair, and blue or grey eyes, occasionally hazel.


  • Colours with a blue undertone suit you, not warm, yellow tones.
  • You'll suit medium to deep colours.

Make-up colours should be cool - avoid browns, greens, creams and gold.



Your skin colouring is neither cool nor warm. Your hair and eye colouring are neutral. You don't suit extremes of colour. A more neutral, mid-tone colour palette is best.

You're likely to have red-toned hair in any shade from strawberry blonde to auburn and with green, brown or blue eyes. Your skin may be light with freckles or dark-toned with a golden (yellowy), olive undertone.

  • Wear colours with a warm (yellow) undertone of medium depth rather than too light or deep.

Choose warm coloured make-up, e.g. brown mascara and eyeliner instead of black. 







Do you have dark blonde, mousey or light brown hair with soft/muted eyes of blue, brown, hazel or green? Tonally, there is no real difference between the colour of your hair, eyes and skin.

  • Your colour palette is understated.

  • Your overall look is blended and soft, which means it's best to wear colours of similar toning, especially medium depth (between light and deep).

Avoid contrasting (opposite) colours.






You have definite contrast in colour between your hair, eyes and skin. Your eyes will be your key feature, they'll often dominate. Your skin may either be light or dark. Your eyelashes and eyebrows will generally be dark.

  • You will suit colours that contrast (dark and light), just like your eyes and hair do.

  • You will suit bright, vivid, clear, bold colours.

  • If you're tempted to wear black, team it up with colour.

  • Avoid soft, muted colours.

Avoid light or dark colours worn together.

The right tone


Often it’s not the colour that’s the key determinant; it’s the tone of the colour.  Take yellow for example.  I never would’ve thought I’d suit yellow.  I’ve worn it from time to time and it hasn’t worked, but that’s because the tone wasn’t right.  I know now that I suit Clear & Warm colours, so the yellow has to be clear, crisp and bright.


And Red - I suit pure red (primary colour, not mixed with other colours) or orangey-based reds as opposed to blue-based reds.



Have a play


Of course it’s one thing to read about colour and quite another trying to select what’s right for you.  Our advice is to experiment.  When you’re next in a clothing store, choose a style of a garment you like and try it on in a number of colours. Hold the colour up under your chin.  Does the colour enhance you, does it bring the colour of your eyes out, does it give you a healthy glow?  If yes, then it’s your colour.  If it makes you looked tired, washed out or even sick, then it’s obviously not right. 


You should know the moment you put something on whether it lifts your overall appearance or not.


A colour should enhance you, it should never overpower you.  If all you can see is the colour, then it’s not right.

  • A change in hair colour, whether through dying it, natural sunlight or ageing, may impact the colours you suit.


  • As we age, our skin softens and so do our features. Our hair colouring may also change. 


  • If our skin colours up over summer, this can alter what suits us too.




I’ve been told I’m an Autumn or a Spring!


Many of you may have had your colours done years ago and been profiled as one of the seasonal colour spectrums - Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter.


There are many ways of describing and categorising colours.  We have opted for one based on the Munsell Colour System.  It’s considered the most widely accepted colour measurement in Britain and the US, first developed in 1903 by Munsell.


It doesn’t matter which system or advice you go with, as long as it helps you to determine what colour palette/s suit you and what to avoid.

Sometimes we just can’t help ourselves!


My colour palettes are Clear & Warm.  Black is not a colour I should wear but I do, I wear truckloads of it! I am better off wearing browns instead; they’re warmer and work well with my yellowy/warm skin tone.


If you’re one of those people drawn to a colour that isn’t necessarily doing you any favours, you can team it up with an accent colour or two, e.g. a scarf, jewellery, shirt and/or makeup.



Sometimes we have little choice


You go to the shops knowing what colours suit you and then you can’t find what you’re looking for!  In this case, you might have to venture slightly out of your colour palette/s.  And what you can’t find in a garment in your colours, you are more likely to find in an accessory like a scarf, jewellery or lipstick.
