Lesson 4: the magic of styling - minimising and disguising
In an earlier lesson, we asked you to concentrate on the great parts about yourself; often easier said than done when you’re not enjoying some things. Here we share some styling tips for minimising or disguising your least favourite bits.
First, let’s address the scale of your body. What size is your overall body frame? This is not about weight, but instead about bone structure and height.
- Small hands, feet and wrists
- Height 160cm or less (5'3")
- Average hands, feet, wrists and height
- Height between 160-172cm (5'3" and 5'8")
- You're tall, have large hands, feet and bones
- Height 172 cm or more (5'8" +)
Styling to suit scale
It's about getting the balance right for your body. If you're a small frame, for example, wearing huge chunky jewellery may overpower you and not look right. Having said that, if you've got a huge personality, you may well be able to carry it off, a more introverted, quiet person may not.
- Small frame
- Your scale is small so your styling is best to match this - small prints and patterns, accessories, shoes and detailing. For example, smaller, more refined jewellery; finer, less chunky shoes and handbags.
- Choose lighter, softer fabrics.
- You can add height to your appearance by wearing one colour from head to toe.
- Large frame
- It's best to go for bigger scale patterns, prints, accessories and detailing in general. For example, big, chunky jewellery, large handbags, big scarves etc.
- Heavier, more structured fabrics will work well for you as opposed to soft, whispy fabrics.
- You can reduce the appearance of your height, if you wish, by wearing different colours top and bottom.
- Average frame
- No surprises here - you need to go for medium/average sized patterns and accessories or downscale or upscale to looks for smaller or larger frames depending on your comfort and personality.
These are just general guidelines. Of course, wear what you feel great in because that's the most important thing.
Putting it into perspective
Marie Claire magazine shows what 70Kg looks like on all different Australian women... you can weigh the same but look totally different depending on body shape and height.
How balanced is your body shape?
Balance is when your torso (upper body) is a similar length to your legs, giving you balanced proportions.
Your waist is the gap between your lowest rib and the top of your hipbone.
- Short-waisted (high-waisted) is when the space between your shoulders and waistline is shorter than average. Some people measure the distance between the waistline and under the bust - if there isn't a lot of room, it is likely to mean you're short-waisted. Being short-waisted can mean you have longer legs, and who doesn't love long legs!
- Long-waisted is when this gap is longer than average. Likely to mean you have shorter legs.
Head to toe
Here are a whole bunch of ideas for minimising or disguising the least favourite parts of your body and what to avoid, and ways of balancing things up if you're short or long-waisted. They'll always be on our website, so you can keep referring to them, and we'll be constantly updating them.
The key is to play down the area you don't want to draw attention to and accentuate your fabulous parts so people immediately look there.
MUST KNOW TIPS
NEVER finish a line of clothing at the widest part of your body otherwise it will accentuate these points, for example:
- a top or jacket should never finish at your waist, hips or thighs if they are the widest areas of your body.
- a short sleeve is not a good idea if your upper arms are thick or if you have a full bust.
- a skirt/trouser hem length should not finish at the thickest part of your leg.
- Avoid wearing designs with thick horizontal stripes at these points either.
- Similarly, avoid detailing like pockets in your larger areas. For example, if you have large hips, the last thing you'll want is a skirt with pocket flaps at hip level. We know this may seem obvious but they're often things we overlook. Another example would be ruffles or pockets at the bust area if you have a big bust.
