Long, lush lashes in an instant

Long, lush lashes in an instant

Eyelash extensions are a fab way to add length, thickness and fullness to natural eyelashes. Here we take a look at semi-permanent eyelash extensions.

What’s involved?

Having done your homework and found a reputable, licensed lash extension clinic or mobile service, you need to determine what look you’re after. Your lash stylist will guide you on what’s right given your natural lashes, face shape, etc. Each extension lash is added on a hair-by-hair basis to your own lashes for a completely natural look. Be careful, some beauty technicians use ‘cluster’ lashes rather than single lashes - which don’t look as natural. The process takes approximately two-hours.

How much does it cost?

Prices vary from clinic to clinic, and there are even mobile services where they come to you - NZD $60-150 for a full set of lashes.

How long can you expect them to last?

With semi-permanent lash extensions, they usually last 4 to 8 weeks depending on the application and the lash sizes used. Typically the fuller the set, the longer lasting they will be. Lashes also last better in winter without the heat and humidity. Regular maintenance, every 2-4 weeks with infills will prolong their life.  Your lash stylist will also talk to you about care and maintenance.

Is it safe?

Yes, but when you’re doing your homework, be sure to check the type of glue they use, that it’s formaldehyde-free.

Does it hurt?

No. Lie back and relax.

What is the most popular look for lash extensions?

There are different lash types available - most women prefer the look of fuller and fluffier ones.

Can I wear mascara with my eyelash extensions, or use curlers?

The beauty of eyelash extensions is that they already provide you with that long, beautiful, dark look so you don’t need to do anything to them. You can wear mascara or curl your lashes if you absolutely want to but don’t do it too often because it will shorten the life of the extensions, and may also upset your natural lashes - they’re best left alone. Talk to your lash stylist about the right approach and general care and maintenance.

Are eyelash extensions suitable for everyone?

Generally yes but if you partake in a lot of outdoor or water activities, this may reduce the longevity of the extensions and you may require more frequent infills.

You may want to re-consider having extension lashes if:

  • you rub your eyes frequently because of say allergies or habit
  • you have highly sensitive skin or irritation around the eyes
  • you have no natural eyelashes, as there is nothing to add the lashes to!
  • Your natural lashes are very curly - the extension lashes don’t last as long on naturally curly lashes.

Do the extensions damage your natural lashes... and if so can this be prevented?

Poor application and incorrect sizes used can indeed cause damage to the natural lashes, so it pays to choose wisely. You need to be realistic with your expectations, avoid choosing sizes that are way too long or too heavy than what the natural lashes can support. They might look good for a few days but the weight can cause the extensions to twist and break your natural lashes.
