Without doubt, our number one essential beauty product has to be a great moisturiser. No matter what your skin type, the right moisturiser can do wonders for your skin and will ensure that it is supple, smooth and even-toned. There is a huge variety of moisturisers on the market, but here are 2 of our readers’ picks:
SAVE: Olay Moisturising Lotion, available from most supermarkets. Approx. $15 for 150ml
SPLURGE: Clinique Moisture Surge Cream, available from specialty department stores. Approx. $87 for 75ml
2. Gentle cleanser
As the skin ages, it’s important to use a cleanser that will remove all traces of make-up, while also being gentle enough not to irritate or inflame the skin. The Eve Lom cleanser is something I’ve just recently sampled and it is truly amazing. It has a gentle exfoliate, but is filled with lots of natural ingredients that leave your skin feeling silky smooth. It is pretty pricey though, so for a more affordable option try Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser.
SAVE: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, available at most supermarkets and pharmacies. Approx $28 for 500ml
SPLURGE: Eve Lom Cleanser, available via Mecca Cosmetica, $149 for 100ml
Protecting your skin against our harsh environment is incredibly important, especially because the skin on our face is so sensitive. My major problem with sunscreen is that it often feels too thick, clogs my pores and is too thick to put underneath make-up. I opt for a light-weight product specifically designed for the face.
SAVE: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF85, available from most supermarkets. Approx. $23 for 88ml
SPLURGE: Clinique Super City Block SPF40, available from specialty department stores. Approx. $50 for 40ml.
4. An ‘all-in-one’ balm
If it makes my life easier, I’m into it. I love the fact that you can now get balms that can be used on your lips, your nails, your face or any area of dry skin on your body. Lucas’ Papaw Ointment is a cult favourite and the 25g tube lasts for ages and is a definite handbag essential:
SAVE: Lucas Pawpaw Ointment, available from most supermarkets and pharmacies. Approx. $12 for 25g
SPLURGE: Trilogy Everything Balm, $24.90 for 45ml
5. Body lotion
While your face may be the area that you think shows your age the most, don’t forget that the skin on your body also needs some love. A rich, luxurious moisturising lotion is perfect for the body as the skin on your body doesn’t get oily like your face. Mind you, you don’t want to be waiting for half an hour for it to dry before getting dressed in the morning. Try these lightweight formulas that will ensure your limbs are perfectly polished, without feeling greasy.
SAVE: Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion. Available from most supermarkets and pharmacies. Approx. $18 for 254ml.
SPLURGE: Clarins Renew Plus Body Serum. Available from specialty deparment stores. Approx. $80 for 200ml
